Fraud Alert: Caller ID Spoofing within the Financial Services Industry

8/14/19

The financial services industry has recently become aware of calls being made to individuals where the Caller ID appears to be from Evans Bank or other financial institutions. This fraudulent activity is called spoofing. Spoofing occurs when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your Caller ID display to disguise their identity. This activity is often used to trick individuals into giving away personal information.

Please remember: Evans Bank will never contact you via phone to ask for personal or account information, including but not limited to, social security numbers, account numbers, mother’s maiden name, debit and/or credit card numbers, passwords, pin numbers, or similar information. Please do not give out or confirm any personal information associated with your accounts, unless you initiated the phone call. Use caution if you are being pressured for information immediately or if there is a sense of urgency.

Please, do not respond to any questions, especially those that can be answered with “Yes” or “No.” Be mindful of and review the source of communications – whether by phone, email, or text – and report any suspicious activity. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us at (716) 926-3313.  For more information on how Evans Bank protects you and your personal information, visit our Security Center.  For more information on spoofing scams and how to protect yourself visit the FCC website.
