All customers to receive new Evans Debit MasterCard by early November

Evans Bank started issuing newly enhanced debit cards containing chip and PIN technology to its customers this week. The Evans Debit MasterCard® features a built-in microchip that improves the overall security of the card and provides additional fraud protection for both in-person and online purchases.

Image of Evans Bank Debit CardThe chip contains encrypted information that makes every in-person transaction unique, making it extremely difficult for the card to be copied or counterfeited. At merchants that utilize chip terminals, the card and terminal work together to add an additional layer of security to the transaction. Chip cards also contain the usual magnetic stripe on the back, so that customers can use their new cards while merchants continue their transition to chip card terminals.

Customers can also enjoy extra protection and feel secure using their new chip cards for online purchases by registering with MasterCard SecureCode at If you make a purchase in a shop, you enter a PIN number or sign a receipt to validate the transaction. MasterCard SecureCode mimics the in-person chip and PIN process over the Internet by providing a digital receipt that you sign off with your own personal SecureCode.

All customers will receive their new debit card in the mail by early November. Customer PIN numbers will remain the same for card purchases and ATM access. Once customers receive their new Evans Debit MasterCard®, they should activate and sign the back of their new card; provide the new card number to any merchants that automatically bill their old card; and securely destroy their old Evans Visa® debit card. Old debit cards will be deactivated 30 days after the issuance of a new Evans Debit MasterCard®.
