Now Evans Bank debit cards are even more secure than before. Starting in 2016, all Evans Bank debit cards will feature a built-in microchip that improves the global usability and security of the card. Here’s what it means to cardholders…

Uninterrupted account access – Purchases and ATM withdrawals will continue to be deducted from your existing checking account, just like before.

Continued convenience – Shopping with your card is faster than writing checks and safer than carrying cash, plus you’re protected with Zero Liability for unauthorized purchases.1

Increased security – The chip contains encrypted information that makes it extremely difficult for the card to be copied or counterfeited. And, at merchants that use chip terminals, the card and terminal work together to add an additional layer of security to the transaction.

Enhanced Protection for Online Purchases

mc_seccode_pngBy registering your new Evans debit card with Mastercard SecureCode, you enjoy extra protection against unauthorized use when you shop online at participating retailers. If you make a purchase in a shop, you enter a PIN number or sign a receipt to validate the transaction. MasterCard SecureCode mimics this process over the Internet by providing a digital receipt that you sign off with your own personal SecureCode.

Just follow these simple steps:

Insert the card into the reader and leave it there for the entire transaction Please note: If you remove the card too soon, the transaction may be canceled and you’ll have to start the transaction over.

Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the transaction

At all other merchants, nothing changes:
Just present the card to the merchant; or swipe it through a conventional reader; or provide the card details by phone or online.

Frequently Asked Questions

The chip contains your card number, name, and other account information. There is no other personal information stored on the chip. Due to security in the chip, every transaction you make is unique, which makes it extremely difficult for the card to be copied or counterfeited. Your chip card will also have the usual magnetic stripe on the back so that you can continue using your card while merchants are transitioning to new chip card terminals.
Chip technology is already used in other countries and now coming to the U.S. Your new chip card provides an extra level of security and is easier to use at international locations.
The PIN on your chip-enabled card is the same PIN as on your previous card. If you forgot what your PIN is or want to change your current PIN, please visit your local Evans Bank financial center to request a new one.

The embedded microchip provides dynamic transaction security features and other capabilities not possible with traditional magnetic stripe cards. A chip card is extremely difficult to counterfeit.
A chip card looks just like a traditional card with an embedded chip in addition to the standard magnetic stripe on the back of the card. Rather than swiping your card, you will insert your chip card into the card terminal to complete the transaction.
Every transaction with a chip card has unique data in it. Chip transactions are dynamic, not static like magnetic stripe cards. That is why if someone were able to intercept one of your chip transactions they would not be able to use that information again. This stops fraudsters from being able to create counterfeit chip cards.

  1. Activate and start using your new Mastercard today. Call 1-800-448-8268 to activate your card.
  2. Sign the back of your new Mastercard.
  3. Provide your new card number to any merchants that automatically bill your old card.
  4. Cut up and discard your old Visa® debit card
  5. Continue to use your existing PIN with your new card for purchases and ATM access.
Use your chip card at the exact same merchants you do now – by inserting the card into card terminals that are chip enabled or swiping your card at merchant locations that have not yet switched to chip-enabled card terminals. You can also continue to use your card as you did before for online payments, telephone payments, and at ATMs.
